Congratulations To Everyone Who Supported MOVEMBER!

Hi Nigel,

Just wanted to thank you and Karen for helping us make Movember a success.  If you haven't already heard, Canada cracked the $20 million mark this year, more than twice what we raised last year, and also got first place worldwide.  It's thanks to businesses and people like you guys that we're able to educate everyone on men's health and fight prostate cancer.

Thanks again!

Got a spare coat that you no longer need? Well, there's plenty of kids who would love it - especially with the cold weather approaching! EASTSIDE LAUGH: A Night At The Cascade

By Anna Killen

It’s no secret that Vancouver’s comedy scene has been hot for a while. Up and down Main St, on most nights of the week, people are doing funny things onstage. Paul Anthony’s Talent Time at the Biltmore, Sunday Service at the Hennessey, Bronx Cheer and practically anything that happens at the China Cloud - all fun times, right? Well, now there is another comedy night to fit into your schedule of laughter.

Northern Transmissions’ Eastside Laughs made its debut on Tuesday, September 7 at the Cascade Room on Main St. Organized by Charles Browstein, an aspiring stand-up comedian who is also putting together a documentary about the secret lives of comedians (every comedian has a dark side, he says), the night showcases a healthy mix of amateur and professional stand-up acts from across Vancouver. See you all on Monday, October 18.

PS: Thanks to Julie for her email below:

Karen and Nigel:

On behalf of Kyle, Owen and Rob, I wanted to thank both of you (and your terrific staff) for a great evening on Monday. The drinks and appie were delicious and having the question that involved the naming the ingredients in the cocktail was absolutely inspired.

We really do appreciate how much work you both put into putting the quiz together as well as the support you give a variety of worthwhile charities. You guys are a class act!

Enjoy your quizless Mondays for the next few weeks. Rob and Owen will be out of town, but Kyle and I look forward to seeing you in mid-October.

You guys rock (like a Beatles song).

Julie

The World Cup's Over - Bring On The World Cup!

A full-house for the World Cup Final.

And so the World Cup 2010 has drawn to a close. We want to say a big thankyou to all who came and got their footie fix at Cascade this past month.

A Cup filled with controversy… and just for the record that was a goal!!! We had some really good turnouts for games, especially for the England games and the knockout stage games, creating a wicked atmosphere.

Pre-game anticipations.

Dutch fans downed clog-draped Grolsch's.

Arjen Robben can't believe the large Dutch contingent at The Cascade Room (or how the hell he missed an open net).

Finally someone scores!

We look forward to being a genuine venue in Vancouver to catch future football tournaments and the forthcoming Rugby World Cup 2011 in New Zealand. See you then!

World Cup Final This Sunday

So, after a month of World Cup Football, we're down to 2 remaining teams fighting it out for all the glory. Will it be the "Reign of Spain" or will Oranje be taking the cup back to Dam Square?

Either way it's going to be a great game so make sure you get here early to ensure a seat.

It's also the last chance to savour our "World Cup Subs-Benches" Both the gin lead Dutch shot and the brandy forward Spanish shots have been hugely popular (no wonder both teams made the final) - so get on down and drink to your favourite team!

Holland v Spain: Sunday July 11.
Doors 10am • Kickoff - 11:30am • See you Sunday!

Three Shirts on my Line

C'mon You England! Frank Sidebottom's "2010 World Cup Theme Song" for England!

R.I.P Chris Sievey.

England v Slovenia: Cascade on City TV Breakfast.

With England standing on the brink needing a win to advance from the Group Stage of the World Cup, it was a nervous early morning gathering at Cascade on Wednesday - made just a little bit more nerve racking as we had CTV Breakfast cameras joining us for interviews and to catch the reaction to goals scored! Though as the video shows, they may have had a touch of trouble trying to be heard above the drums, whistling and general cheering - just imagine if we'd been allowed to serve alcohol at that hour of the day!

"The final whistle goes - Let the celebrations begin!"

Luckily for the England fans who packed in for the 7am kick-off, the 1-0 scoreline was enough to send them through to the Round of 16 and sets up a Sunday morning game - 7am again, damnit!!! So, come and cheer England on with us as they battle Germany in a knock-out game (just don't mention the war). See you there!!!

Don't forget, we're showing all matches LIVE! Check out the full schedule at: www.thecascade.ca

Canada v USA at The Cascade Room

While it wasn't the result we were hoping for it was still a great night Sunday as Canada took on the USA in the final preliminary round of the Olympics Men's Hockey.

Booths and tables filled quickly as people crammed in to cheer on the Canadians (along with a few dodgy Americans).

However a dream win against the USA was not to be, with the Canadians coming up short 3-5 and now sets up a sudden-death matchup against the Germans tomorrow night.

Think Canada can bounce back? We'll be back on board tomorrow night, so come on down and cheer them on!

What The #$@%?!!

Monday Night at The Cascade Room is Quiz Night. What the #!*@ is Quiz Night you ask? It’s a great way to spend a Monday night, that’s what it is.

Of course I would say that, because I’m your Quiz Mistress.

Q: Where did pub quizzes originate?

A: In the United Kingdom in the 1970s.

The Cascade quiz night began in homage to the great Pub Quiz in Britain and has turned into a “must-do” weekly event in Mount Pleasant.

Each quiz consists of three rounds of questions with ten questions in each round.

Q: What types of questions are asked?

A: General knowledge, Art, Literature, Science, Movies & TV, Geography and History, to name several. There is also a "Name that Tune" question and always photos to identify.

Naturally, there are always rules:

- Maximum 4 members per team (one point deduction per round for every player over)
- No cell phones
- Even if I'm wrong, I'm still right!!!

Prizes? Yes, there are prizes. Unlike in the UK, there is no Jackpot (believe me, it gets competitive enough without $$ being at stake). Instead, the money that you pay to join in (everyone pays $2) goes to local charities chosen by either the winning team or by another participating team. So far we have raised over $9600. As for the prize – the top team win a $25 gift certificate for The Cascade Room or our sister place next door, Habit Lounge and other incentives!

Come with some friends and show us how smart you are. You never know, you might win, or you might leave feeling really thick…either way, you’ll have a laugh.

Registration for Quiz Night starts at 6pm and the quiz starts at 7pm...give or take a few minutes. The next quiz is Monday, February 8th and the following quiz will be on Tuesday, February 16th.

Robbie Burns Night!

A big thanks to everyone who joined us last night for our Robert Burns celebrations, kicked off with a rousing rendition of Burn's ode to drink by actor/author Chris Humphreys:

Let other poets raise a fracas
"Bout vines, an' wines, an' drunken Bacchus,
An' crabbit names an' stories wrack us,
An' grate our lug:
I sing the juice Scotch bear can mak us,
In glass or jug.

A packed room listened to ambassadors from prominent whisky producers from Scotland, Ireland and Wales wax poetic about their Whiskies; Isle of Arran (Scottish Distiller of the Year 2007), Cooley Distillers (European Distiller of the Year 2008) and Penderyn Welsh Whisky (recognised worldwide as one of the finest malt whiskies).

A toast from Chris Humphreys.

With the "educational" part of the evening over, the lovely Cumbrian Singers and celtic duo Tóg go bog é, entertained with traditional music and song.

The Welsh Cumbrian singers.
