Just wanted to thank you and Karen for helping us make Movember a success. If you haven't already heard, Canada cracked the $20 million mark this year, more than twice what we raised last year, and also got first place worldwide. It's thanks to businesses and people like you guys that we're able to educate everyone on men's health and fight prostate cancer.
Got a spare coat that you no longer need? Well, there's plenty of kids who would love it - especially with the cold weather approaching! So why not drop it off at The Cascade Room and we'll make sure it goes to help a kid stay warm this winter. And it's not just coats - we'll gladly accept blankets and other warm clothing as well.
I want to thank everyone who came out for our 100th quiz on Monday! It was a really fun night and I thoroughly enjoyed it...hope all of you did, as well!
I'd like to congratulate the winners who pulled out a whopping 87/100 - Luis Inacio Lula DaSilva's Sloppy Seconds! Second place went to two teams, Decipher the Bomb and Vancouver Shark Board and third place went to Malarky and Hutch! Well done, guys!
The most exciting thing about last night is the money raised! The Downtown Eastside Women's Centre was chosen out of the hat and $422 from the quiz will be heading their way. Nigel and the gang at Cascade will be matching the pot so that's $844...yay!!
So thanks again!! We'll be back next Monday for our usual 3 round quiz!
It’s no secret that Vancouver’s comedy scene has been hot for a while. Up and down Main St, on most nights of the week, people are doing funny things onstage. Paul Anthony’s Talent Time at the Biltmore, Sunday Service at the Hennessey, Bronx Cheer and practically anything that happens at the China Cloud - all fun times, right? Well, now there is another comedy night to fit into your schedule of laughter.
Northern Transmissions’ Eastside Laughs made its debut on Tuesday, September 7 at the Cascade Room on Main St. Organized by Charles Browstein, an aspiring stand-up comedian who is also putting together a documentary about the secret lives of comedians (every comedian has a dark side, he says), the night showcases a healthy mix of amateur and professional stand-up acts from across Vancouver. A Huge THANK YOU to everyone who came out for the Quiz of Champions last night! It was a great night and I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did!
Congratulations to our new champions, Shark! The Herald Angels Sing! They won after a tense tie break with sweeties, Another Mediocre Effort...did you know that the word f*ck is said 246 times in Goodfellas? Well, the winning team did! Well done you kids!
2nd place went to Not On Normal Courtyard Exercises, 3rd place to John Doe's Absurdly Relevant Something-or-Other and the coveted Booby Prize went to another of my favorite teams, Mah Dynasty!! Enjoy the board game kids!!
Last night's pot of $230 has been donated to the Portland Hotel Society:
Please note that Quiz Mistress Karen will be taking a break from Monday Quiz Nights for the next couple of weeks.
There will be no Quiz Night's on September 27, October 4 and October 11.
See you all on Monday, October 18.
PS: Thanks to Julie for her email below: ---------------------------------------------- Karen and Nigel:
On behalf of Kyle, Owen and Rob, I wanted to thank both of you (and your terrific staff) for a great evening on Monday. The drinks and appie were delicious and having the question that involved the naming the ingredients in the cocktail was absolutely inspired.
We really do appreciate how much work you both put into putting the quiz together as well as the support you give a variety of worthwhile charities. You guys are a class act!
Enjoy your quizless Mondays for the next few weeks. Rob and Owen will be out of town, but Kyle and I look forward to seeing you in mid-October.
Come down this Wednesday 28th July from 6pm -10pm for a Hendrick's Gin party, circa 1920, 'A Most Unusual Evening Of Frivolity' with period characters, music and most importantly some free samples of Hendrick's gin cocktails
And so the World Cup 2010 has drawn to a close. We want to say a big thankyou to all who came and got their footie fix at Cascade this past month.
A Cup filled with controversy… and just for the record that was a goal!!! We had some really good turnouts for games, especially for the England games and the knockout stage games, creating a wicked atmosphere.
Dutch fans downed clog-draped Grolsch's.
Arjen Robben can't believe the large Dutch contingent at The Cascade Room (or how the hell he missed an open net).
Finally someone scores!
We look forward to being a genuine venue in Vancouver to catch future football tournaments and the forthcoming Rugby World Cup 2011 in New Zealand. See you then!
So, after a month of World Cup Football, we're down to 2 remaining teams fighting it out for all the glory. Will it be the "Reign of Spain" or will Oranje be taking the cup back to Dam Square?
Either way it's going to be a great game so make sure you get here early to ensure a seat.
It's also the last chance to savour our "World Cup Subs-Benches" Both the gin lead Dutch shot and the brandy forward Spanish shots have been hugely popular (no wonder both teams made the final) - so get on down and drink to your favourite team!
Holland v Spain: Sunday July 11. Doors 10am • Kickoff - 11:30am • See you Sunday!
With England standing on the brink needing a win to advance from the Group Stage of the World Cup, it was a nervous early morning gathering at Cascade on Wednesday - made just a little bit more nerve racking as we had CTV Breakfast cameras joining us for interviews and to catch the reaction to goals scored! Though as the video shows, they may have had a touch of trouble trying to be heard above the drums, whistling and general cheering - just imagine if we'd been allowed to serve alcohol at that hour of the day!
"The final whistle goes - Let the celebrations begin!"
Luckily for the England fans who packed in for the 7am kick-off, the 1-0 scoreline was enough to send them through to the Round of 16 and sets up a Sunday morning game - 7am again, damnit!!! So, come and cheer England on with us as they battle Germany in a knock-out game (just don't mention the war). See you there!!! -------------------------------------------------------------------- Don't forget, we're showing all matches LIVE! Check out the full schedule at: www.thecascade.ca
As a follow-up to our tremendously successful "bobsled shots" for the Winter Olympics, the Cascade Room is excited to introduce the "sub bench shots" for this summer's FIFA World Cup. The "sub benches" hold four shots, inspired by 16 of the 32 competing nations and come complete with a trivia card for each country. Drink Up!!
The countdown is on to the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa and we’ll be showing all World Cup matches in our BIG SCREEN LOUNGE area, either live or on repeat!!!
Get ready as we'll be opening each morning for the 11:30am LIVE game June 11-21 and from 7am June 22 onwards through to the World Cup Final scheduled for Sunday, July 11 at 11:30am.
The off-field competition at The Cascade Room should be just as intense as the on-field exploits in South Africa, with England, South Africa and Australia all represented at the bar (sorry to our Canadians and lone Welshman - maybe 2014 in Brazil).
“21st Century Bars”, is a 240 page hardcover book featuring the best designed bars from around the world so we're very honoured to be a part of it.
Obviously, a big thanks goes to Evoke for their design (they also designed Habit next door) and for all the long hours they have since put in at the end of the bar!!! And an extra special thanks to photographer Janis Nicolay whose beautiful images grace this book!
There's an added bonus to look forward to this St. Patrick's Day at Cascade this year! Our friends at Russell Brewing will be bringing along a cask of Irish Red from their Brewmaster Series. The cask will be tapped at 6pm sharp! We hate to see grown men and women cry so get there early because once the cask is empty... that's it! But don't despair, there will still be plenty of other libations, including a feature Irish Whiskey cocktail from our very own Nick Devine and delicious Irish dishes from chef Travis Williams.
Live entertainment will be provided by Tim Readman and Hugh Ellenwood playing Celtic music from 9-11pm.
It's amazing the ideas that get thought up over a few pints!
The guys from Evokativ spent the Gold Medal game screaming their lungs off at Cascade and have now launched their latest t-shirt design - SIDNEY 7:40. It's nice to know we were able to provide the creative juice for this great t-shirt!!!
What a way to cap off the Olympics?!! A full house at Cascade, a 2-0 lead in the third, a moment of doubt as the U.S. tied it up with 24 seconds to go and finally the overtime winner by Sid The Kid. Let the celebrations begin!
Can the boys do it? We think Yes!!! Judging by the pre-opening lineups on Friday afternoon you'll have to arrive early to get a seat to watch the game. Doors at 11am - Game at high noon!!!! BRING IT ON!
Wow! What an amazing atmosphere it's been during the Olympic hockey games! People have been out in force at The Cascade Room cheering on the Canadian boys. Tonight they front up against those pesky Russians
Think they can win? Come and watch the game on ourbig screen, but better get there early if you want to get in!
The sport of bob sledding takes on a whole new meaning at The Cascade Room throughout the Olympics with barman Nick Devine having created an array of shots which sit nicely together on our 'homemade' sleds. So come on down and support your favourite team, whether it be the vodka with a lemon twist Russians or the Pimm's led British team - pick your sled, jump on and hang on for the ride!
Don't have a ticket to tonight's Opening Ceremonies? Neither do we! Then again, you don't need a ticket to enjoy the party at Cascade. Come and join us from 4pm to watch all the festivities. Let the Games begin!
Monday Night at The Cascade Room is Quiz Night. What the #!*@ is Quiz Night you ask? It’s a great way to spend a Monday night, that’s what it is.
Of course I would say that, because I’m your Quiz Mistress.
Q: Where did pub quizzes originate?
A: In the United Kingdom in the 1970s.
The Cascade quiz night began in homage to the great Pub Quiz in Britain and has turned into a “must-do” weekly event in Mount Pleasant.
Each quiz consists of three rounds of questions with ten questions in each round.
Q: What types of questions are asked?
A: General knowledge, Art, Literature, Science, Movies & TV, Geography and History, to name several. There is also a "Name that Tune" question and always photos to identify.
Naturally, there are always rules:
- Maximum 4 members per team (one point deduction per round for every player over) - No cell phones - Even if I'm wrong, I'm still right!!!
Prizes? Yes, there are prizes. Unlike in the UK, there is no Jackpot (believe me, it gets competitive enough without $$ being at stake). Instead, the money that you pay to join in (everyone pays $2) goes to local charities chosen by either the winning team or by another participating team. So far we have raised over $9600. As for the prize – the top team win a $25 gift certificate for The Cascade Room or our sister place next door, Habit Lounge and other incentives!
Come with some friends and show us how smart you are. You never know, you might win, or you might leave feeling really thick…either way, you’ll have a laugh.
Registration for Quiz Night starts at 6pm and the quiz starts at 7pm...give or take a few minutes. The next quiz is Monday, February 8th and the following quiz will be on Tuesday, February 16th.
A big thanks to everyone who joined us last night for our Robert Burns celebrations, kicked off with a rousing rendition of Burn's ode to drink by actor/author Chris Humphreys:
Let other poets raise a fracas "Bout vines, an' wines, an' drunken Bacchus, An' crabbit names an' stories wrack us, An' grate our lug: I sing the juice Scotch bear can mak us, In glass or jug.
A packed room listened to ambassadors from prominent whisky producers from Scotland, Ireland and Wales wax poetic about their Whiskies; Isle of Arran (Scottish Distiller of the Year 2007), Cooley Distillers (European Distiller of the Year 2008) and Penderyn Welsh Whisky (recognised worldwide as one of the finest malt whiskies).
A toast from Chris Humphreys.
With the "educational" part of the evening over, the lovely Cumbrian Singers and celtic duo Tóg go bog é, entertained with traditional music and song.
